Lea Cheung
Music Therapist
Lea Cheung is an Australia-registered Music Therapist and Guzheng artist who works with youth and adults across a wide range of emotional and psychological challenges. Her practice operates at the intersection of clinical inquiry and musical expression. She utilizes music therapy as a profound, non-verbal medium, recognizing that rhythm, melody, and harmony can reach areas of the brain that traditional language often cannot.
Therapeutic Approach
Lea’s approach is dynamic, culturally responsive, and deeply empathetic. She creates a supportive therapeutic space where clients can safely explore their inner worlds through sound, improvisation, and musical interaction, developing new pathways for emotional expression and resilience. Her work integrates clinical music therapy techniques with contemporary improvisation, specializing in the use of the pentatonic scale to support trauma recovery. By engaging clients in active music-making and reflective listening, she helps regulate the nervous system, reduce anxiety, and provide a safe outlet for emotions. This allows clients to bypass verbal barriers, gaining insight into emotional triggers and facilitating deep psychological healing that may be difficult to access through surface-level discussion alone.
Professional Experience
Her therapeutic practice is informed by her deep understanding of cross-cultural applications in music therapy and her innovative use of traditional instruments in clinical settings to foster psychological well-being.
Alongside her direct clinical work, Lea contributes to the global academic advancement of music therapy. She presented her specialized research on improvisation at the 2024 International Conference on Improvisation in Music Therapy in Belgium, and discussed cross-cultural therapeutic applications alongside Dr. Oliver O’Reilly at the 2024 Australian Music Therapy Conference. In 2025, she expanded this discourse by serving on a panel exploring the intersection of AI, religion, and music therapy. Her soundscapes are also captured on the therapeutic album Higher Love - Noon Moon.
